The Importance of a Chiropractic Exam

Posted: July 20, 2016
By: Dr. Craig Hensley

Many people think that chiropractic is about walking into the office and saying to the doctor it hurts here, then getting “cracked” and that is the end of it.  This may be the experience some people have had but it is not the experience you will have in our office.  One of the most important parts of beginning chiropractic care is the chiropractic examination.  This exam gives me so much information about the patient and what their causes their problems, not just where is the pain.  Let me explain what the exam is, and how this is a crucial part of your care.

Our chiropractic exam is a comprehensive examination that is split into two parts.  First, we begin taking your health history.  We discuss your current problems in depth.  After, discussing your current issue, we then go over any surgeries, medications, or illnesses that you may have.  We also talk about your everyday activities like exercise, diet, and work.  Then finally we talk about any past accidents that you may have experienced like major slips or falls or car accidents.   All of this allows me to better understand the physical, mental, and emotion stress that you go through every day.  The second part of the exam is the physical exam.  This part includes taking vitals, chiropractic, orthopedic, neurological, and range of motion testing.  The exam shows how your body moves and how it responds to specific stresses.

After reviewing the exam, the information helps the doctor to determine the best treatment for the patient.   Often after doing my through examination I find issues that the patient does not even know are there.  This allows me to treat issues proactively to prevent problems instead of just treating pain.  The exam helps me to determine what type of adjustment is best for the patient, where to properly adjust, and how long treatment is necessary for the best results.

Overall the exam is one of the most important parts of your care.  It is crucial allow me to treat you and to help you improve your body’s functions, and to help you obtain 100% optimal health.  If you are ready to get started with your through chiropractic examination, please call us 336-904-0752 to make your appointment today.

Chiropractic Care is Different from Medicine

Chiropractic care is different from medicine.  This is something that is very important for chiropractic patients to understand. Chiropractic care is unique because it is the only profession that evaluates the body for spinal subluxations and then treats them through specific scientific chiropractic adjustments.  The goal of a specific scientific chiropractic adjustment is to reduce nervous system interference and allow your body to self-heal and to function at 100%.

One way chiropractic care is different from medicine, is chiropractic care is not about taking care of symptoms.  Many people first seek chiropractic care to alleviate pain.  However, as the chiropractor my goal is find the dysfunction in the body and restore the body to its proper function.  For example many times when people will go to their family doctor for back pain they are prescribed muscle relaxers for muscle spasms.  In most cases the patient does have muscle spasms, but the question is why are the muscles in spasm?  Muscle spasms are often due to a subluxated vertrebra in the low back that causes interference to the nerves of the low back that control the muscles, causing them to spasm as a way to protect the spine from further damage. The muscle relaxer goes against the body’s own protective mechanism and never treats the underlying issue so the body can heal.  However, specific scientific chiropractic care addresses the cause of the problem and by correcting the cause the muscle spasms will go away.  Chiropractic is about finding the cause of your problem, not treating the symptoms of it.

Another way chiropractic is different, is that chiropractic is not an aspirin.  What I mean is chiropractic is not something that is only utilized when there is pain.  Subluxations are caused by stress.  Our bodies are affected by physical, chemical, and emotional stress every single day and that stress causes subluxations.  When a subluxation first occurs there are typically no symptoms.  The symptoms show up after the underlying weakness has been there for a while.  This means you should be checked by your chiropractor on a regular basis for the correction of subluxations, not just when you have a pain.

Chiropractic care is amazing and unique.  We treat the entire body to find the underlying cause of your problem.  Our goal is for you to have 100% optimal health, not just to treat your aches and pains.  If you are ready to try something different, please call Triad Family Chiropractic at 336-904-0752 to set up your first appointment today.  You will not be disappointed and your body will thank you.

Something Different

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.” Albert Einstein.

This quote popped into my head while I was at a health fair a few weeks ago.  I spoke to several people that began telling me all about their back problems they had had for years.  They would tell me about the pain they had experienced from bulging discs or sciatica and how it negatively affected their lives.  Then they would comment on everything they had tried from over the counter medication, pain pills, and in some cases even surgery and there was no relief.

As they told me their stories I was saddened their loss of health and the negative impacts on their lives.  But then, an excitement came over me because I had something to offer that they never tried.  It wasn’t a new drug or the latest and greatest surgery.  It was chiropractic and the life changing effects it could have on these people.

I explained about our God given innate intelligence that allows our body’s to heal itself, and how scientific specific chiropractic adjustments removed the interference to our body to allow life to flow from above, down, inside and out and that true healing comes from within.

I was presenting these people with an opportunity to have pain relief and get their lives back.  However, on many occasions I received the same answer; no I am just going to keep doing what I have been and maybe it will get better.  I would then politely give these people my card and ask them to call when they were ready to try something different.

So if you are tired of the doing the same thing over and over and not improving your health, then chiropractic is perfect for you.  Is it time for you to take that first step?  Do you have questions about how we can help you?  Please call Triad Family Chiropractic at 336-904-0752 today to set up your first appointment.

Make Your Health a Priority This Year

We hope you had a happy New Year and great Christmas.  Everyone was busy traveling, spending time with families, and going to Christmas parties in December and now it is time to get back in the swing of things.  It is time to make your health a priority again.

Every day we have physical stress, chemical stress, and emotional stress that attack our body.  Physical stresses are the slips, falls (especially with the bad weather coming), repetitive motions, strenuous activities like shoveling snow, long periods of sitting, auto accidents, and poor sleeping habits.  The chemical stresses are poor diets, environmental toxins, tobacco smoke, and drugs that affect our bodies.  And finally, physical stresses include the deadlines we must meet, work stress, traffic jams, and financial problems that we face every day.

All of this stress causes spinal subluxations that impair our nervous system and cause problems with neurological function by causing spinal subluxations.  The scientific specific chiropractic adjustment is the only way to remove these terrible spinal subluxations.

If it has been awhile since your last visit, you have friends or family that would benefit from care, or you would like to get started with care today, please call Triad Family Chiropractic at 336-904-0752 to schedule your appointment today.

Unbelievable Results

By: Dr. Craig Hensley

A few weeks ago I had a funny situation occur.  I wanted to start an online ad.  Anyone who has made one of these ads knows how the process works.  First you write a short ad, and then pick a few key words, and anytime those words are searched for online your ad should come up in their search.  However before your ad shows up the company must approve your website. That is where the problem began.

After setting up the ad I received an email saying it was not approved.  After almost a week of phone calls and emails to the company I finally figured out why my ad was not approved.  The company told me that my website had reviews on it and these reviews were not believable.  After laughing at their answer, I sat down and looked at by website and read over the reviews.

When I read what people had said about the success they had had with chiropractic, I was in awe.  People who had been in pain for years, with conditions they were told would not get improve, but yet through the amazing scientific specific chiropractic adjustment they were helped.  Chiropractic is not about treating a disease or symptom.  It is about removing the neurological interference that is placed on the body by vertebral subluxations and then allowing each person’s body to function properly and heal itself.

I have been involved with chiropractic for over 14 years as a patient, then a student, and now a doctor.  During that time I have experienced and seen some amazing things.  When looking at what the internet company said, I could understand how the reviews might sound untrue, if you did not know the power of chiropractic.

So if you are looking for the unbelievable results that can only be achieved through chiropractic please call Triad Family Chiropractic at 336-904-0752.  Your chiropractic story is only a phone call away.

Migraine Headaches

Posted: December 12, 2015

Anyone who has had a migraine headache knows the true meaning of pain .  A migraine headache can put a person in bed with pain for hours and sometimes days.   Migraine headaches affect a person’s quality of life and they can even lead to depression if the patient can not find relief.  Anyone who suffers from these headaches needs to ask three questions:  What are migraines? What causes these headaches? And what can I do for these headaches?

To begin with, what are migraines?  There are two types of migraines, classic and common.  A classic migraine is preceded by an aura.  An aura is any type of visual change that comes before the headache.  Typically the patient will see flashing lights or have blurred vision for about thirty minutes and then a debilitating headache will occur.  A common migraine does not have an aura associated with it.  There is no warning sign to a common migraine.  Both types of headaches will have unilateral throbbing pain that can last from four hours to three days.  These headaches can also cause vomiting and nausea.  Migraines will send the patient to a quiet, dark room for the duration of the headache.

Migraines are caused by a problem with the nerves of the upper neck and head.  The abnormal nerve function cause severe pain.  Migraines can be triggered by a number of things.  These include stress, exercise, bright lights, aggravating smells, hormonal changes, environmental changes, changes in the weather, and certain foods.  Foods include caffeine, chocolate, high fructose corn syrup, certain types of cheese, nitrates, and certain wines.  Triggers will vary person to person.

Finally, what can be done for these headaches?  Keep a headache diary to track when the headaches began, what you were doing at the time, and how long they last.  The more detailed the diary is the more likely triggers can be determined.  All triggers should be avoided.  When a headache begins it is best to find a cool, quiet, and dark room to lie down in until the pain subsides.   One of the best ways to take care of migraines is chiropractic care.  Scientific specific chiropractic adjustments restore the proper function to the nerves of the head and neck.  Chiropractic care will help to decrease the symptoms of a migraine as well as decrease the strength, and frequency of headaches.

I understand migraine suffers because I have them myself.  I have dealt with these headaches since childhood.  Chiropractic care was the only thing that helped me.  When my headaches were at the very worst, I would have at least four headaches a week.  Through regular chiropractic adjustments my headaches are manageable and only occur once few three months.  If you or someone you know suffers from migraines, or any headaches, call 336-904-0752 to make an appointment at Triad Family Chiropractic today.  For a migraine suffer it may be one of the most important calls you ever make.

It Is Not About Pain

I was at a health fair last week talking to people about the benefits of chiropractic.  A common conversation that I had with many people went as follows:

Me:  Have you ever had your spine checked by a chiropractor?
Person: No
Me: Is there a reason you have not been to a chiropractor?
Person:  I don’t have pain or don’t have back problems.

Having pain is not the only reason to see a chiropractor, and in my opinion it is not even the most important reason to visit a chiropractor.

I have never had a cavity but I have been to the dentist many times in my life.  Most people do not just go to the dentist only when they have pain.  They go to have strong healthy teeth, a pretty smile, and to prevent problems down the road.  Think of chiropractors as dentist for your spine.  Going to chiropractor helps you to have a strong healthy spine, near perfect posture, and to prevent spinal issues.

A specific scientific chiropractic adjustment has a profound effect on your overall health.  Chiropractic adjustments improve neural function, decrease nerve interference, improve sleep, increase energy, affect mood and memory, stimulate the brain, increase proprioception, increase performance, boost your immune system, and improve your overall health.  All of those things have nothing to do with pain.

Did you know that the first chiropractic adjustment was not for neck or back pain?  In 1895 a man by the name of Harvey Lillard was a janitor at the Ryan building in Iowa.  In the building that he worked, there was a magnetic healer by the name of DD Palmer.  Harvey had been deaf for 17 years and he told DD that his deafness began when he was exerting himself in a cramped and stooped position and he felt something give way in his back.  Since that time he could not hear “the racket of a wagon on the street.”  DD Palmer asked if he could exam Mr. Lillard’s spine.  Upon examination DD found that a vertebra in Harvey’s spine was “racked” out of place.  DD believed that if the bone was realigned then Harvey would get his hearing back.  DD said he racked the bone into position by using the spinous process as a lever and soon Harvey could hear again.  They said that Harvey could now here the ticking of a watch, which he had not done for 17 years.  DD Palmer was the founder of chiropractic and the first adjustment was not about someone’s pain.

In conclusion, because you have pain is only one of many reasons why you should visit a chiropractor.  If the only thing that chiropractors did was take care of pain, which we do very well, we would be a good profession.  However we have so much more to offer the world and that is why we are a great, one of a kind profession.  Have your spine checked regularly by a chiropractor to be a happier healthier you and receive all of the great benifits of chiropractic care.

The Wisdom of the Body

Posted: October 21, 2015
By: Dr. Craig Hensley

“The wisdom of the body is responsible for 90% of the hope of patients to recover.  The body has a super wisdom that is in favor of life, rather than death.  This is the power that we depend on for life.  All doctors are responsible for letting their patients know of this great force working within them.”  Dr. Richard Cabot, Harvard Medical School

Dr. Cabot is referring to something that chiropractors call innate intelligence.  It is the vital force within your body that controls every single cell, tissue, and organ.  It is responsible for growth, replacing of worn out tissues, and repair of fractures or other injuries.  An egg and sperm first come together to form one cell.  Then that cell divides into 2 and then into 4 cells and so on. The first organ that forms from this replicating of cells is the brain and spinal cord.  This is the lifeline of your body that is responsible for life to flow.  Life flows through the nervous system, from the brain, down the spinal cord, from the inside and out to the entire body.  Life flows from Above, Down, Inside, and Out.

Without this communication between the brain and the body innate cannot flow and your body will not heal and function properly. Optimal Health is the body’s expression of innate intelligence at its highest level.  The only thing that can heal the body is the power within the body.  Healing does not come from a bottle.

A great example of this is when you cut your finger.  As soon as you injure the finger your body knows exactly how to repair it and it starts placing down cells to heal the cut.  We may put a band aid on it or some type to ointment to ease the pain or discomfort but our body does the healing.  If you have any question about this, take a piece of steak and cut it.  Then you can put any ointment, dressing, or bandage that you like on it.  No matter what you used that steak will be never grow back together because there is no life flowing through it.

The goal of chiropractic is to relieve the interference to the nervous system through the chiropractic adjustment.  When the body is free of interference the signals can flow freely between the brain and the body and true health can be expressed.

If you live in North Carolina near Kernersville, Winston Salem, Walkertown, High point, or Greensboro please call Triad Family Chiropractic today to find out how chiropractic care can help you to reach optimal health and all your innate intelligence to flow.

October is Chiropractic Month

Posted: September 30, 2015
By: Dr. Craig Hensley

Do you know what October is?  In North Carolina October is Chiropractic Month.  Governor Pat McCrory signed a proclamation that October is Chiropractic month.

In his proclamation Governor McCrory gave many statements raving about the importance of chiropractic in the health care system and the expertise of chiropractors.  He stated:

“Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) are physician level providers who focus on the whole person in their conservative approach to heath care, and have particular expertise in the prevention, care and rehabilitation of neuromusculoskeletal injuries and conditions; and
Whereas, Doctors of Chiropractic are educated in nationally accredited, four-year doctoral graduate school programs through a curriculum that includes a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical internship, with the average DC program equivalent in classroom hours to allopathic and osteopathic medical schools; and
Whereas, Doctors of Chiropractic are recognized worldwide for their pain-relieving, health enhancing and injury-prevention services;”

This statement very clearly sums up the value of chiropractic for everyone.  We treat patients of all ages from new-borns, children, teenagers, adults, and elderly patients.  Our goal is to treat the whole person to find the true cause of their issues and to help them reach their optimum health without drugs or surgery.  Chiropractic is great at relieving pain and preventing future injuries.

He also touched on our education.   Many people do not realize it but chiropractors are required to have a 4 year degree and then attend 4 years of chiropractic school. While in chiropractic school we take many classes similar to that of medical and osteopathic schools.  The major difference in education is that while the allopathic curriculum teaches pharmacology, the chiropractic curriculum teaches the skill and art of adjusting the spine.

So have you visited your chiropractor lately?  Or have you ever been to a chiropractor?  If the answer is no to both questions please call Triad Family Chiropractic today to make an appointment to have your spine checked.  It is an investment in your health and Chiropractic Month is a great time to get started with your chiropractic care.

If you live in Kernersville, Winston-Salem, High Point, Walkertown, Greensboro or other surrounding areas call 336-904-0752 to get started.

Which Doctor Should I See First?

Posted: September 15, 2015
By: Dr. Craig Hensley

A new patient called the other day and asked, “I have back pain, do I need to see my medical doctor to be diagnosed and then ask if they will refer me to you?”  Over the past few weeks I have received very similar questions from multiple patients.  The simple answer is “No”.  You do not need to see your medical doctor first, but let me break down the question and explain why.

First, do you need to be diagnosed before coming to see a chiropractor?  Chiropractors are trained doctors.  It is our job to evaluate, diagnose, and treat musculoskeletal problems.  Every patient that comes into the office is examined thoroughly before any treatment is performed.  The exam includes your health history, vital signs, orthopedic testing, neurological testing, and chiropractic testing.  After the exam, if needed, x-rays are taken in the office.  The purpose of the exam and x-rays is to give the doctor as much information as possible to make a proper diagnosis of your problem and determine the best way to treat your issue and help you regain your optimal health.

Second, do you need a referral?  In most cases, you do not need a referral to see a chiropractor.  There are very few instances in which you would need a referral, and these are usually due to a few specific insurance policies.  You can call our office or walk in anytime to make your appointment without a referral from another doctor.

Finally, anytime you consult a doctor, you want to know who is going to give you the best outcome.  Chiropractic is a natural, non-surgical, and drugless way to treat your problems.  A recent article I read state that “spinal, hip, and shoulder pain patients had clinically similar pain relief, greater satisfaction levels, and lower overall cost if they initiated care with doctors of chiropractic, when compared with those who initiated care with medical doctors.”  A link to the article is found below.

So if you are looking for pain relief, greater satisfaction, and lower cost with your healthcare, please call Triad Family Chiropractic at 336-904-0752 today, to schedule your first visit.  We are conveniently located in Kernersville, NC a short drive from Winston Salem, Walkertown, High point, and Greensboro.
